painted with a male and female peasant figure within a pastoral landscape, the scalloped and fluted rim with gilt borders, fleur-de-lis mark in underglaze blue.

Condition

There is a firing tear at 9 o'clock, approximately 1½ in. long. There are numerous scratches to painted decoration. ½ in. shallow chip to footrim.

Catalogue Note

A similar charger is illustrated by Alessandra Mottola Molfino, L'arte della Porcellana in Italia, fig. 131.

Although the palette and style of painting on the present piece are somewhat similar to that found on the piece cited above, the quality of the painting, and the presence of 'soft' scratches to the surface of the porcelain under the enamel and under the glaze, suggest that this piece was painted some time after the date of its manufacture.
