Description
the curved top-rail centred by a diaper enclosing a six-pointed star flanked by flowers and foliage within a rectangular panel terminating in scrolls and a flowerhead flanking a bellflower, with a padded back and seat on sabre legs, the front legs with paw feet
Provenance
Marquis de Baye, 58 Avenue de la Grande Armée, Paris.
The chairs are illustrated in situ in, Le Style Empire, 5th Series, F. Contet ed., 1920, plate 2, reproduced here in fig.1.
Condition
Joints sound and sturdy. There is an old restoration to the top-rail of one and some minor restorations to veneer. Old very minor marks, chips and scratches commensurate with age which do not detract from this piece. The wood is a little dry looking, especially on the fronts and would benefit from a repolish and very attractive casting to gilt-bronze mounts which are a little dirty and would benefit from a light clean according to taste. Old minor restoration to the foot of one rear right leg which protrudes slightly and may benefit from further minor restoration although it is sturdy and can be left. An attractive set in overall good condition.
Measurements:
86cm. high, 47cm. wide, 41cm. deep; 2ft. 9¾in., 1ft 6½in., 1ft. 4in.
