Catalogue Note

In this delightful landscape Glover presents an extensive and wide reaching view of Grasmere in the Lake District. The dramatic height of the Helm Crag is placed centre right of the composition. The Crag is known locally as the 'Lion and the Lamb' due to it's distinctive form. Wordsworth's house, Allen Bank is just visible to the left of the village of Grasmere, where he moved with his family in 1808.

Steel Fell and Silver Howe are visible behind the Helm. To the right, just behind the Scotch firs, is the pass Dunmail Raise which links Old Westmorland to Cumberland. The road upon which the figures are travelling in the near foreground was later replaced with a lower and more easily traversable turnpike road which is now no longer in use.
