Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition, with some very minor surface dirt. ULTRAVIOLET Ultraviolet light reveals extensive re-touching to the background, particularly the sky. Some repair work has been carried out to the upper right and lower left of the canvas. FRAME Held in an ornate gilt plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

For an almost identical version see Mary Webster, Francis Wheatley, 1970, p. 121, no. 15.  A similar composition in the Paul Mellon Collection is said to show the remains of Halling Hall.  Wheatley travelled down the Medway to Rochester in 1776.
