STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE There is a horizontal area of cracquelure and some paint loss to the upper centre and upper right of the painting. There are two or three scattered specks of paint loss elsewhere on the canvas. The original portrait appears to have been painted over to include peer's robes, and this later addition has since been partially removed. ULTRAVIOLET Ultraviolet light reveals scattered re-touching and re-painting throughout. FRAME The painting is unframed.
