Catalogue Note
Shortly after his arrival in London in 1632 van Dyck produced several self portraits. The earliest shows him with a gold chain, possibly the one which is recorded in April 1633 as a gift from the King, and in which he is depicted in the famous self portrait with a sunflower (Duke of Westminster). Another was recorded in the Royal Collection as 'to the Shouldrs with his left hand at the breast'. In about 1634 he appears to have painted a more informal self portrait of which this picture is a copy (see S.J. Barnes, N. De Poorter, O. Millar and H. Vey, Van Dyck, A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, 2004, no. IVA3). The best surviving version is in the Indianapolis Museum of Art and an early copy is at Versailles.
