Catalogue Note
The Campion family originated in Essex and lived at Campion Hall near Epping and then Combwell in Kent where the Royalist Sir Edward Campion lived. This picture is one of a group of portraits which originally hung at Danny Park in Sussex, an Elizabethan house built in 1593 by George Goring. It was acquired in 1652 by the Courthorpe family from whom it passed in 1724 to Henry Campion, husband of Barbara Courthorpe.
