Condition

The work would appear to be in generally good condition. The canvas has been lined. A stretcher bar mark is visible along upper edge. There is a small area of discoloured restoration, visible to the naked eye, to the left of the vessel's topsail. There is some very fine craquelure visible in certain areas. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some old conservation along the upper edge and the upper left hand edge. There is a spot of inpainting above the vessel to the far left of the composition, some scattered spots throughout sky and in the top left sail, as well as some small dashes of retouching to the main body of the ship. Held in a gilt wood frame.
