Charles Deane fl.1815-1855

bidding is closed

Description

  • Charles Deane
  • A view of Trafalgar Square
  • oil on board

Provenance

With M. Bernard, 21 Ryder Street, 1962

Condition

Oil on board. The board is in good, stable condition. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a thick varnish which obscures a clear reading, however, there would appear to be some evidence of retouching along the lower edge, and in the sky. Generally, the work would appear to be in very good condition. Held in a gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Trafalgar Square was originally the courtyard of the Great Mews stabling which served Whitehall Palace.  By 1832 work had begun on the National Gallery which was designed by William Wilkins with additions of the terrace, staircase and fountains by E.M. Barry.  Deane would have seen the completion of all this work, including the raising of Nelson's Column which was erected in 1843.
