The canvas has been lined. The painting would appear to be in generally very good condition. There are some surface scratches below the mother's right arm. These would be easily remedied. There are some similar scratches in the lower right hand corner. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some retouching to the edges of the canvas, where an old frame may have rubbed. There is some evidence of retouching in the mother's hair. Held in a plain gilt wood frame.

The sitter could be the wife of Lewis Goldsmith (1764-1846), the political writer, whose daughter Georgiana married John Singleton Copley, Lord Lyndhurst, the Lord Chancellor in 1837.
