Catalogue Note

Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts and Charles Conder are regarded as the quintessential Australian impressionist landscape painters, but it was McCubbin who particularly identified with Australian working and domestic life. McCubbin often painted images from everyday life: men sawing tall timber, his wife shelling peas, his children at the piano, or playing in the garden, often with chickens or ducks. This small intimate work is typical in many aspects – painted with quick, confident, feathery brushstrokes that perfectly capture all the light and colour and movement of his subject.
