'I want to paint good pictures that children will love.'1
Born in Chippendale Sydney in 1922, Sam Fullbrook was predominantly known as a painter of the bush and an occasional portrait painter. His broad subject matter took him all across Australia, working as a canecutter and miner.
Nocturne with Aeroplane and Fishes painted in 1965 shows Fullbrook's exquisite sense of colour and balance. Instead of being intimidated by the harshness and brutality of the Australian outback, Fullbrook found beauty in the details of nature and the surrounds.
'When Robert Juniper told Fullbrook that he could not see the aeroplane, Fullbrook's reply was, 'So what? Australian painters take themselves too seriously - if you want to paint a tree flying through the air, do it'.' 2
