Catalogue Note
Shaun Gladwell's video works embrace the dichotomy of high and low cultures he gleans from modes of pop/sub-cultural expression (graffiti, breakdancing, BMX riding and skating) while simultaneously drawing deeply from art and literary history and discourse.
Storm Sequence, 2000, immediately invokes the turbulent, sublime seascapes of J.M.W. Turner. Gladwell has immersed himself wholly within the exhausting physicality of nature, positioned as a lone figure pirouetting on his skateboard on the concrete platforms that border the sea at Bondi. As with Turner, the tempest brews around him. He is entwined within the shifting nature of the ocean: crashing waves, tides and wind. The rain flickers at the camera lens, the soundtrack a quiet assault of short circuiting electric currents. The footage, opposing the slick, fast paced, jump cut images of the genre is slowed down by 40% of its natural speed resulting in a meditative, contemplative choreography imbued with isolation and tension.
Storm Sequence, 2000 was originally commissioned by Sydney art collector Peter Fay and has been shown around the globe, most recently at the 52nd Venice Biennale where Gladwell was singled out by U.K. art critic and author, Richard Dorment: 'If I had to pick the single young artist in this Biennale destined for future greatness, it would be the Australian Shaun Gladwell'. 1
