BRETT WHITELEY
1939 - 1992
AUSTRALIAN
BEACH SCENE
Signed and stamped with artist's studio stamp lower right; inscribed 'Joy and Max / This note, that I am very happy is going to you two, is a glimpse, the first glimpse of an ENORMOUS summary canvas maybe 25 feet - 30 feet long that I hope to paint this summer when visits to the beach and swimming become daily events. So you will see that this little drawing is the... tora tree so large the shade it casts should cover the gambit of Australian theatre - the beach being the most marvelous stage./ The upper edge will show the suburbs back to the city, tumbling then onto the near white sensual sand./ my main problem is how to paint the male figure which I dislike painting, as much as Michelangelo hated painting the female.' and indistinctly dated October 1981 on the reverse
