Catalogue Note

In the Burlington Gallery exhibition catalogue this work was described as 'The Maori lights a fire in a place frequented by the Ki-Wi (Apteryx), and lying hidden calls the bird, knocking them over as they come within range, the birds' attention being rivetted on the fire'.  Within the murky shadow of the nocturnal landscape, the kiwi is visible to the right of the fire, with the moko-masked hunter hidden in the bush on the left, ready to strike.
