Catalogue Note

W C Piguenit is a masterly painter of water: as river and ocean, mist and cloud. This facility is evident in the Tasmanian mountain landscapes he painted from survey expeditions in the 1870s and 1880s, in views of the Grose River valley painted on Eccleston Du Faur's artists' camp in 1875, in spectacular panoramas of the 1890 Darling River floods and in his late seascapes and coastal views. The present work, with its drifting cloud and marshy foreground, is a fine example of the artist's wet wilderness. Both the romantic atmosphere and the geological instructive array of basalt columns suggest that it is possibly a study for and definitely related to the major painting A Mountain Top, Tasmania (circa 1886, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery).
