Catalogue Note

Sali Herman settled in Sydney in 1948. He quickly established himself as an artist of repute winning the Wynne prize in 1944 and from 1946-48 he was appointed an official war artist. In that first decade in Sydney Herman established his signature style - the application of paint with a pallette knife on a soft finely textured ground - and subject matter - inner city Sydney as seen in House, Sydney. Barry Pearce comments that Sali Herman 'made people look at urban Sydney in a completeley new light' 1
