Description

  • John James Audubon (after)
  • Scolopaceus Courlan (Plate CCCLXXVII)
  • Sheet 660 by 987 mm 26 by 38 7/8 in
Hand-colored engraving with etching and aquatint, by R. Havell, 1837, on wove paper with the J. Whatman 1837 watermark, with wide margins, generally in good condition apart from mottled light- and mat stain, repaired tears at upper and right sheet edges, occasional fox marks, framed

Condition

Print is generally in good condition as catalogued. Exposure to light and an acidic mat has resulted in an overall darkening of the paper tone which is inconsistent particularly in the margins and at right. There is a c. 1/2 inch loss at the upper sheet edge at left and two short (c. 1 inch) repaired tears at the right sheet edge. All are backed with japan. Fox marks are few, but dark and the verso is soiled. Handling creases appear throughout the sheet.
