Description

  • John James Audubon (after)
  • Broad-winged Hawk (Plate XCI)
  • sheet 970 by 643 mm 38 1/8 by 25 1/4 in
Hand-colored engraving with etching and aquatint, by R. Havell, c. 1827, on wove paper with the J. Whatman 1831 watermark, with wide margins, generally in good condition except the colors faded, tears at the sheet edges (longest at lower left measuring 2 3/4 inches), the sheet edges and verso discolored, time stain, framed

Condition

Generally in good condition as catalogued, the colors in this print are faded. The tear at lower left measures 2 3/4 inches, is not repaired and extends through the publication line. There are two additional tears at the upper sheet corner measuring c. 2 inches each and both have been backed. Additional shorter tears appear at left and right; those at left are associated with previous stitch holes from the disbound edge. The sheet edges are discolored, as is the verso (mottled staining suggests the print was washed or previously laid down.)
