Catalogue Note

Mastering enamel-work was one of the focuses of the Gorham Manufactury in the early 1890s, culminating in their winning the Gold Medal for enamelling at the 1893 Columbian Exposition.  This piece is probably Gorham's answer to Tiffany's Indian and Saracenic-style enamelled pieces, designed by Edward C. Moore and John T. Curran; several of these were shown at the 1889 Paris Exposition (see John Loring, Magnificent Tiffany Silver, pp. 64-72).
