Catalogue Note
Between 1901 and 1909, Salvatore Cernigliaro (Cherny) influenced the style of the figures made in the Dentzel factory by adding elaborate ornamentation to the area around the right front shoulder on many of the outside row figures. Dentzel lions are based on Moroccan lions which could be found in the Philadelphia Zoo in the early 1900's and are currently extinct in the wild.
