Catalogue Note
The C.W. Parker Company of Abilene, Kansas turned out dramatic horses. Like the simpler horses of eastern carousel companies, the Parker animals were made for traveling rides. However, Colonel Parker, the 'Amusement King,' designed sophisticated animals which conveyed a sense of strength and movement.
This spectacular fancy outside row horse was part of a group of Parker horses discovered in Pinellas County (near St. Petersburg), Florida several years ago. It was on display at the Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky, Ohio, as part of an exhibition entitled 'Steeds of Knights'.
A similar horse is illustrated in Charlotte Dinger, The Art of the Carousel.
