Catalogue Note
Vine Valley, New York is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State on the west shore of Lake Canandaigua. The current painting shows the busy hamlet where farmers work in the vineyards, ladies stroll, children play with toys, dog chases cat, steam boats ply the lake in the background. There is even a depiction of Abner Doubleday's newly invented game of baseball taking place in the center right.
The painting is indistinctly signed and dated J.G. O. Becker (?), 1888, l.r.
