Condition

Proper right butt hinge loose and flange that attaches to lid has two new brass screws; proper left butt hinge has a think leather or cardboard wafers added between hinge flanges that attach to the top and backboard; good color; minor wear to corners of stiles; very good condition overall

Catalogue Note

This rare miniature blanket chest's inlay relates it to items made in western Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Kentucky.  Peter W. Chillingworth illustrates several pieces, including a chest and desk with closely related inlay, in his article "Inlaid Furniture of Southwest Pennsylvania, 1790-1840" The Magazine Antiques 123, no. 5 (May 1983), pp.1040-3, fig. 4, pl. II and Lois L. Olcott illustrates several Kentucky desk-and-bookcases with related inlay in her article "Kentucky Federal Furniture" The Magazine Antiques 105, no. 4 (April 1974), pp.870-82.
