Condition

Overall in very good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. The black painted areas show surface scratches, wear to paint, nicks, and very minor dings. The outer corner of one shade with losses to paint, showing the grey aluminum underneath, measuring less than ½ inch. White painted interiors of the shades with surface dirt and minor scratches and some evidence of black paint at the edges, likely original. One shade with two more significant scratches alongside each other revealing the aluminum underneath. The larger is approximately 2 inches long. The bases with evidence of white house paint at the edges and around the screw holes. These lights are currently configured for American electrical plugs and voltage. The largest of the circular element that is part of each ceiling plate is possibly replaced. These are extremely rare examples of this model which varies in size from the standard example. An elegant and simple design.

Catalogue Note

This pair is originally from a set of ten variant examples with an extended post.  Four from the series were formerly in the collection of Wolfgang Joop (sold Sotheby’s New York, December 12, 2003, lot 401).  The rare “Moule” or clam shade with minimally restricted light and the contractive brass ball socket give this form an elegant simplicity.
