Catalogue Note

In 1929, the LZ 127 Zeppelin Graf, piloted by famed airshipman Dr. Hugo Eckener, left Lakehurst, New Jersey and traveled 19,500 miles circumnavigating the globe.  This commemorative sculpture was given to Tide Water Oil Company as recognition of their efforts in this endeavor.  The circular band of decorative elements charts the direction and stops of the journey.  The Zeppelin would continue to be used as passenger aircraft until the tragic crash of the Hindenburg on May 7, 1937, which was recently marked by a 70th anniversary memorial.

According to an undated photograph of the sculpture with Dr. Hugo Eckener, this work was designed by "Wilhelm" and cast by the Gorham Foundry, although there are no markings on the sculpture.
