Description

  • José Zanine Caldas
  • Bench from the Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil
  • wood and metal hardware

Condition

Overall in fair condition. The wood with significant discoloration, rubbing scratches, nicks, dings and losses the edges. The surface throughout is inconsistent, although this is part of the roughness of the surface which is inherent in the design and not an issue of condition. With significant surface dirt and staining. There is a crack extending half the length of the top rail just above the joint to the seat back. With two circular stains to the seat. Various smaller cracks extending horizontally along the seat and the back. The back with two lighter areas of significant rubbing to the each end as seen in the catalogue illustration. The feet with larger losses, cracks and losses to the finish. Each of the four feet with what appears to be water damage extending approximately three inches up the feet. The bench is stable, yet would benefit for sensitive restoration to stabilize some the cracks in the seat.
