Catalogue Note

The Boar is also known as the Calydonian Boar and Il Porellino. It was discovered in Rome together with other animals which formed a hunting scene. Sadly the others pieces have been lost. The piece was first recorded in 1556 and by 1591 was in the Uffizi where it remains until this day. It was at that time one of the best known antique pieces and was copied by Pietro Tacca in 1634 for Grand Duke Casino II. The base of the Boar was replaced in 1857 by a plain rectangular block, previously the Boar had been seated on a base modelled with a profusion of plants and animals.
