Catalogue Note

Towards the beginning of the last quarter of the nineteenth century the Société Anonyme du Val d'Osne became allied with J.J. Ducel, who also exhibited at the London exhibitions of 1851 and 1862, from his Paris address of 26 Faubourg Poissoniere. Ducel had been in business since 1800 and by 1862 the company was exporting twenty five per cent of its production. In 1878, on the death of Monsieur Ducel, the Val d’Osne foundry had purchased the firm’s patterns, including the design with the putto and scroll handles.
The design for this urn is illustrated in: J.C. Renard, L'Age de la Fonte, un Art une Undustrie. 1800-1914. Suivi d'un Dictionnaire des Artistes, Paris 1985, p. 100.
