Catalogue Note

Reference 1463 was manufactured from 1940 until the late 1960s. One of the most coveted of all Patek Philippe chronograph references, it is especially favoured for its water-resistant type case with rounded pushers and screw-down case back. Examples in steel are rare, the present watch is one of only 15 examples known from the market with Breguet numerals and the only one known with this combination of luminous accents and Breguet numerals. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the present wristwatch has appeared at auction.

An exceptional example of the reference 1463, the present wristwatch was made for the American market as indicated by the HOX engraving on the movement. Since the watch was made for the American market, the tachometer is shown in miles rather than kilometers, a rare feature on Patek Philippe chronographs. The watch also clearly bears the word "Swiss" which was proudly displayed on vintage wristwatches destined for the export markets. Interestingly, the "Swiss" signature on the dial has been moved above the 6 o'clock position seemingly to accommodate the luminous dot below the numeral. When one compares the present wristwatch to other versions with the "Swiss" signature, one can see that it is more usually found between the base of the numeral at 6 o'clock and the tachometer scale. If the "Swiss" marking was moved to this position on the present watch, it would be obscured by the luminous dot, thereby affecting the overall harmony of the dial.

The inside of the case back is stamped 'FB', the maker's mark for Taubert & Fils. From the late 19th century, when it existed under the name Frères Borgel, Taubert & Fils was one of the finest Geneva based case makers and specialized in water-resistant cases. They were commissioned by many of the finest watchmakers, including Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin.
