Description

  • A rare stainless steel automatic centre seconds wristwatch with bracelet circa 1953 ref 6204 Oyster Perpetual Submariner 'James Bond'
  • diameter 37mm.
nickel lever movement, Rolex Superbalance • later black dial, luminescent triangle, dot and baton indexes, gilt luminescent hands • Oyster case with screw-down case back and crown with Rolex crown and Swiss cross, domed back, rotating black bezel calibrated for 60 units • case, dial and movement signed • with a later steel Rolex Oyster bracelet with folding clasp

Condition

The movement is running. Replaced dial but still with some age. Discoloured luminescent markers. Case overall with scuffs from wear. Bezel insert may be a later addition as the early bezels are not shown with the divisions between the markers. Modern Rolex Oyster bracelet in good condition. Case numbered between lugs 6204 and 988809, inside case back also numbered 6204.

Catalogue Note

The Submariner 6204 is one of the first submariner models made by Rolex and was launched at the Basel watch fair in 1954. These early models had pencil-shaped luminescent hands.
The nickname 'James Bond' comes from the fact that the Submariner models without crown guards were frequently used in the early Bond films.
