Catalogue Note

Jan Eisenloeffel (1876-1957) was born in Amsterdam, where he studied drawing at the Rijksnormaalschool. After his graduation in 1896, he joined the company Hoeker & Zoon in Amsterdam, where he was taught silversmithing. In 1898 he went to St. Petersburg and to Moscow where he specialised in niello and enamel techniques. It was also here that he met with the unusual shapes and ornaments we find so typical of his work.

In 1900 Wilhelm C. Hoeker founded a co-operative firm for interior design, called 't Binnenhuis, together with H.P. Berlage and Jac. van den Bosch. They wanted to create well designed and affordable utensils. They also wanted to create a saleroom for artists from Amsterdam. Eisenloeffel was one of the artists who was asked to join the company. It was here that he sold his designs for three years. In 1903 he left 't Binnenhuis and became one of the founders of De Woning. During this period Eisenloeffel designed many pieces of silverware. Some of his designs were executed by Carel J. Begeer, including the bonbonière offered here.
