carved oak, with castellated frieze above alphabetised letter racks either side of a narrow central notice board, the opposing side with full size notice board, the frieze with an aperture for a reading light, stamped with a Palace of Westminster inventory stamp
Provenance
This unusual piece was commissioned for the House of Commons and produced in the Palace of Westminster estate workshop. It may well date from the restoration and re-fit of the Commons by Sir George Gilbert Scott following a German bombing raid in 1941. This work was finished in 1950. The colour and form bear a resemblance to some of the decorative details designed by Scott, notably in the Members Lobby and Commons Chamber.
