oak, with stop fluted terminals and foliate carved motifs the upper section with four panel doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the lower section with four frieze drawers and the central pair of doors enclosing a void interior, the pair of flanking doors each enclosing a fixed shelf
Provenance
By repute this impressive cupboard was one of a pair and formed part of a commission by Charles Vane, Sixth Marquis of Londonderry for Wynyard Hall, County Durham. In 1911 the piece was purchased by the Parker family of Lanchester, County Durham and thence by descent to the current vendor.
Condition
Of impressive proportions. The carved detail and figuring of the oak strike one as fine. However, the wood does have a rather dry appearance - the piece would benefit from a wax and thorough clean. The interiors are large and feature adjustable shelves making it useful. There are typical minor scratches and bumps from transit but nothing of any major concern. Eleven door panels have splits which have occurred naturally over the last century. There are some loose moldings notably at the top of exterior pilasters there is also some minor losses in these areas - these should be easily replaced. The piece is imposing and very charming, it looks as if it has come straight from a country house.
