Catalogue Note
Nonsuch Palace was a Tudor royal palace that was built by Henry VIII in Surrey. Begun in 1538 it is arguably the greatest of Henry VIII's building projects. The palace fell into disrepair during the 17th century and today nothing remains of the structure.Richmond Palace was a royal residence from 1327 to 1649. Formally known as Sheen Palace, that wooden structure was destroyed by fire in 1497. Henry VII rebuilt the palace and it is this building that can be seen in the present watercolour.
Images of these two royal palace are rare and the present pair of works are 18th century copies after two 17th century oil paintings by an unknown Flemish artist now in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge.
