A good mahogany chiming and musical longcase clock, William Addis, London, circa 1775

12-inch dial with mask and scroll spandrels, matted centre with seconds dial and calendar aperture, subsidiary dials in the arch for strike/not strike and chime/not chime below a tune selection arc and flanking a recessed plaque signed William Addis, London, the massive nine pillar four train bell striking movement chiming the quarters on a nest of eight bells and playing one of six tunes on a carillon of eleven bells, the restored case with blind swan neck and moulded caddy cresting, stop-fluted hood pillars, the trunk door with shaped top, panelled plinth, the trunk and plinth flanked by similar stop-fluted pilasters

Dial is reasonably clean but there is some tarnishing to the silvering. Movement looks as though it would run but may benefit from a clean. Case has been restored, seat board and back board replaced, small section of moulding lacking from left upper side of trunk, other minor old losses and marks throughout. With pendulum, 4 weights, winder and 2 case keys.

William Addis, who worked at Birchin Lane, London, was apprenticed in 1738, Free from 1745, Master of the Clockmakers' Company in 1764 and died in 1785. This clock was first owned by William Murdoch (1754-1839), the Scottish inventor who worked with James Watt, and came directly from his descendants when first offered for sale in these rooms on 6th October 1994
