A good 8-day mahogany marine chronometer, Victor Kullberg, No.4856, London, circa 1885

4¾-inch silvered dial signed Victor Kullberg, Maker to the Admiralty, The Indian & Italian Governments, 105 Liverpool Rd. London N, calibrated for twenty-four hours and  with up/down dial flanked by crowned garters recording prize medals awarded in 1860, 62 & 64 and engraved To HM the King, Sweden and Norway, the seconds dial numbered 4856 and with a record of further awards, the well spotted fusee and chain movement with Earnshaw's detent escapement, Kullberg's balance with auxiliary compensation and helical spring free-sprung, with balance guard, the similarly numbered brass bowl case gimbal fitted to a three tier mahogany box with brass bound corners and flush fitting handles

The movement and dial are in good condition and the chronometer looks as though it would run; please note the box is not original; with winder and case key

Victor Kullberg, an exceptional and inventive horologist, was born at Gothland, Sweden in 1824. In Old Clocks & Watches and their Makers, F J Britten says of Kullberg 'One of the most brilliant and successful horologists of the 19th Century'. He worked first for Louis Urban Jürgensen in Copenhagen and then came to London in 1851. His workmanship was of the highest quality and his output included watches, chronometers and regulators. He was maker to the Admiralty and several continental governments. His excellent craftmanship was widely acknowledged and he was awarded a number of medals from 1860 through to 1889 when he was honoured with the Cross of the Legion of Honour. He died in 1890.
