A walnut longcase clock, Charles Gretton, London, circa 1695

11-inch dial with cherub and leaf spandrels divided by foliate engraving, signed Cha Gretton, London, matted centre with seconds dial, ringed winding holes, engraved calendar aperture and well pierced hands, the movement with ring-turned and knopped pillars, (one lacking), inside count wheel, the flat top case with altered cornice, hood pilasters, the trunk  bordered with a chevron band, the door similarly decorated, the sides crossbanded and divided into panels, replaced plinth 

Dial would benefit from silvering of rings. Movement lacking one pillar. Wheel trains appear to be original throughout, much in need of a clean. Case with later alteration to top of hood, frieze fret lacking, some moulding around trunk door replaced, plinth replaced, case locks lacking, many old marks scuffs and cracks throughout. With pendulum, 2 brass-cased weights and winder but no case key.

Charles Gretton, a highly respected maker, was apprenticed in 1662 and Free of the Clockmakers' Company from 1672. He served as master in 1700 and died in 1733.
