12-inch silvered dial signed Mallett, Barnstaple, the outer minute ring enclosing seconds dial with astronomer's marks and an hours dial, the substantial five pillar movement with jewelled pallets to the dead beat escapement, maintaining power, high count train with end stops where possible, six-spoke wheels and beat adjustment on the crutch, enclosed by brass dust shutters, with mercury pendulum, the case with architectural pediment, the tympanum set with a silvered plaque engraved Regulator on a banner, angled hood corners, the glazed trunk door flanked by similar corners and panelled plinth, the interior with a silvered beat plaque

Dial a little tarnished. Movement in need of a clean. The case with a number of chips, minor losses, cracks and paint splashes. With pendulum (mercury stored separately), weight, broken winder and 2 case keys.

John Mallett established his clock and watch making business at 4 High Street Barnstaple in 1811. He supplied a clock for Barnstaple parish church in 1820. In 1848 his son, also John, joined him in the Barnstaple business and John(1) retired in 1850. The Mallett family later became antique dealers in Bath and London.
