Bay Middleton was bred at Middleton Stoney, Oxfordshire by George Child Villiers, 5th Earl of Jersey, a prominent racehorse breeder and owner who was twice appointed as Master of the Horse to Queen Victoria, in 1841 and 1852.  Born in 1833 by Sultan out of Cobweb, Bay Middleton ran only as a three year old, winning his first race at Newmarket and remaining undefeated the rest of the year.  His victories included the 1836 Derby Stakes at Epsom and the Two Thousand Guineas at Newmarket.  Leg problems prevented him from racing in later years and he was retired to stud, becoming Champion Sire in 1844 and 1849.
