Catalogue Note
Lewis Kennedy (fl.1810-1868) was born into a horticultural family; his parents owning the Vineyard Nurseries in Hammersmith which supplied plants to many of the finest gardens of the day. Early in his career he travelled to France, working as a gardener at Malmaison in the employment of Empress Josephine. On his return to England in the early 19th century, he is recorded as providing designs for the gardens at Bowood, Wiltshire as well as Middleton Park. From c.1818-1868 he oversaw the creation of the formal gardens at Drummond Castle, Perthshire, his acknowledged masterpiece.
