Catalogue Note

The Jersey Chapel at Middleton Stoney was designed by Lewis Vuillamy (1791-1871), the son of Benjamin Vulliamy, the celebrated clockmaker.  He became a student at the Royal Academy in 1809 and in 1818 was awarded the Academy's travelling scholarship, enabling him to spend four years on the Continent, chiefly in Italy.  On his return he obtained a considerable practice, especially for churches and chapels.  He was commissioned by George Villiers, 5th Earl of Jersey to create a chapel at the family's seat in Oxfordshire.

The designs in these albums show some of the family monuments including those erected by Sarah Sophia, widow of the 5th Earl of Jersey in memory of her late husband and children.
