Catalogue Note

Thomas Cundy was the name of three British architects, father, son and grandson.  Thomas Cundy Senior (1765-1825) was born in Cornwall and trained as an architect in Plymouth before establishing his practice in Pimlico, London.  His son Thomas Cundy Junior (1790-1867) joined his father's firm and succeeding him as surveyor to the Grosvenor Estates in London.  Thomas Cundy III (1820-1895) joined the practice in the 1840s, again working alongside his father.

This view of Middleton Park by Thomas Cundy Junior shows the house before the alterations to his father's designs commissioned by George Child Villiers, 5th Earl of Jersey (1773-1859).
