Condition
The canvas has been lined.
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals retouching in the background, to the sitter's costume, and some light cosmetic touches to her face, eyes and flesh tones. There is evidence of a passage of retouching in the foliage to the lower right hand corner.
The varnish layer is very dirty and the work should clean well.
Held in a gilt wood frame.

The sitter was formerly believed to be Barbara Chiffinch, daughter of William Chiffinch, Closet Keeper to Charles II. She married Edward Villiers, 1st Earl of Jersey (1656-1711) in 1681, bearing him two sons William and Henry and a daughter Mary.
