A set of six Dutch black japanned side chairs 19th century

in early 18th century style, decorated with exotic Chinoiserie scenes, with drop-in seats, on cabriole legs, one bearing a label MAPLES DEPOSITORY, From Dressing Room, Earl Beatty

The label almost certainly refers to Admiral David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty, 1871-1936. He was a very distinguished seaman and naval commander who was appointed Commander of the Grand Fleet in 1916. He received the German naval surrender after the First World War. In 1919 he was appointed Admiral of the Fleet and also in the same year First Sea Lord. He was granted a peerage and became Earl Beatty, Baron Beatty of the North Sea and Brooksby.

 

 

Generally good. All of firm stance. Black Japanning and gilt very tidy. Some minor marks and wear commensurate with use and age and to be expected in dinning seat furniture. Two chairs with sympathetic repairs to the cresting rails. Feet with typical scuffing and some minor fragmenting. Upholstery in very good order. Very decorative and of a delicate appearance. Good general condition. Some minor chips and wear. Some repairs to top-rails. Some losses and wear to back feet. They are extremely decorative.
