A set of six George III mahogany chairs in the style of Hepplewhite late 18th century

with shield backs, together with a pair of modern mahogany armchairs in similar style

Purchased from Spink and Co. in 1979

All of these chairs have later strengthening brackets to the chair rails, all of which have old worm damage. One splat has some recent damage in the form of clean breaks. All splats with old minor damage and some restorations. One splat has later applied strengtheners to the reverse. All feet scuffed and worn consistent with age and use.

Hepplewhite in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer`s Guide, 3rd edition, 1794, illustrates a design for a chair almost identical to the present lot, reproduced in  J. Munro Bell, Chippendale, Sheraton and Hepplewhite Furniture Designs, 190, p.211.
