An Elizabethan oak boarded stool late 16th/early 17th century

the pierced sides with ogee arches and incised fleur-de-lys motifs, on trestle supports, with stepped cuts to the base, seat restored

Generally good. The seat has been subject to scorching and as a result has old fragmenting and the original surface has been removed. However this top does have patina. Traces of old worm. Some typical splits in the trestles and fragmenting to feet. The top has four apertures, some now with filler.

For a comparison see a fine group of boarded stools that were sold as part of The Adler Collection, 24th February 2005, these rooms, lots 59-68. These stools, constructed from five flat shaped boards pegged or nailed together, are some of the earliest extant forms seen in English Furniture. Sustained heavy usage would explain why survivors from the sixteenth century are rare. Ralph Edwards writes '...very few of these stools have survived and a high proportion have undergone restoration' (Dictionary of English Furniture, vol. III, London, p.167) .
