Catalogue Note

The decoration on the top of this table is in imitation of excavated 'antique' Etruscan vases.  The style was popularized by publications such as The Collection of Etruscan Greek and Roman Antiquities from the Cabinet of the Hon. W. Hamilton, His Britannick Majesty's Envoy Extraordinaire & Plenipotentiary at the Court of Naples, MDCCLXVII (1767), following the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum.

In the early 19th century the 'Etruscan' style was interpreted in an original fashion by Pelagio Pelagi (1775-1860) as witnessed by his designs for the Gabinetto Etrusco at Racconigi near Turin.
