Catalogue Note

The design for this pair of chairs closely follows a model which is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, inv. 3582, illustrated, Bill G.B. Pallot, L’art du siège au XVIII siècle en France, Paris, 1987, p. 112.  This unstamped and, to date, unattributed armchair, was made circa 1720-1730, it is of identical proportions and appears to be identically carved.   Many of the design elements incorporated in this armchair would be echoed in the work of the leading Parisian menuisisers for the next 20 to 30 years.
