A Mason's Ironstone green-ground fireplace surround circa 1830

Description

  • black printed `China Chimney piece' mark
  • 118cm., 46½in. high, 113cm., 44½in. at widest point
of rectangular form, reserved with shaped panels printed and coloured with birds, deer in landscape, flowers and vases of flowers, against a green ground scattered with stylised leaves

Condition

One upright broken, one repaired, both breaks visible in photograph, central top section of mantle has two large chips and associated cracks to back around a 90 x 35mm section which is restuck. Only 50mm x 5mm visible from top, the two end podiums both have hairline cracks to the top 150mm and 75mm through decoration. Central mantelpiece section the left end has been broken off and restuck along where it joins the shaped outer section, the join can been seen in white section of photograph, some minor losses along join, some minor wear to enamels throughout, also variations in colour of green ground. Plaster and paint attached throughout.
